A brief background of the character:
In the year 1999 there was a masive explosion centered near Gekkoukan High School on Port Island, Japan. While most people were concerned only with the obvious, something much more sinister was going on underneath their very noses. That night marked the birth of the Dark Hour, the hour that exists between 12:00 and 12:01 AM. During this time normal people are trasmogrified, or sealed inside coffins, and sleep through the entire ordeal. Along with the Dark Hour came Tartarus, a monolithic structure that takes the place of Gekkoukan High every night. During this time creatures called Shadows are free to roam as they wish and prey upon the minds of any person who is unlucky enough experience the Dark Hour without being sealed away.
The advent of the Shadows also marked the birth of those with the power to fight them; those with the "potential" or Persona Users. Akihiko Sanada was among the first three Persona Users. He and his classmates Mitsuru Kirijo and Shinjiro Aragaki were known as SEES(Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad), which, on paper, was a club at the school. Akihiko's reasons for fighting are simply so that he can become stronger. He is consumed by the idea that by being strong enough he can protect everyone. He took on this mindset after a tragic event in his childhood, the death of his sister Miki during a fire. His most powerful memory of that night was being held back by others and not able to reach his sister. This memory is what drives him to work so hard at becoming stronger.
Akihiko and his classmates were the only SEES members for a long time. After Shinji lost control of his Persona one night and killed a bystander he left the group, leaving only Akihiko and Mitsuru. These two remained the only members for two years (ten years after the explosion) until they were joined by a junior named Yukari Takeba. Shortly afterwards they also recruited two other students, Junpei Iori and the nameless "protagonist." Around this same time Akihiko injured his ribs fighting a dangerous Shadow that only appears during full moons. This meant that all of the fighting was left to the three new members for nearly six weeks (Mitsuru was in charge of support). During this time SEES attempted to begin investigating Tartarus. Eventually they were joined by other Persona Users Fuuka Yamagishi, Aigis (a robot), Ken Amada (an elementary school student) and Koromaru (a dog) and came to the conclusion that they could put an end the Dark Hour by defeating all 13 of the Shadows that appear during full moons. After many attempts, Akihiko also managed to convince his friend Shinjiro to rejoin. Although, he only did so because of some sort of relationship with Ken...
Akihiko is a senior at Gekkoukan High and is the captain of the school's boxing team. His Persona is called Polydeuces (in its descendant form) and is of the Emperor Arcana. Like all Persona Users, Akihiko summons Polydeuces by placing a gun-like object called an evoker to his head and pulling the trigger. No, it is not a real gun and no, it does not hurt the user in any way.
